History of School

Ballylanders N.S  is in the Diocese of Cashel and Emly under the patronage of Archbishop Dermot Clifford. Education in Ballylanders can be traced back to Penal times i.e. Hedge schools.

The history of National School Education in Ballylanders goes back to 1850 when approval for 2 schools which catered for 100 boys and 100 girls was given. These were housed in a two storey building where Michael Buckley’s shop now stands.

In 1891 the parish priest of the time made an application for 2 new schools. The site was purchased from Michael Condon.

In 1893 two new schools were built, one for the girls and one for the boys. There was a principal for each school but in 1947 the schools were amalgamated under one principal. These two buildings form our present school. These buildings were renovated and modernised over the years.

In 1999 an extension to the rear of the building, consisting of a staff room and new toilet block for boys and girls was added.

In 2008/09 a further extension of 2 classrooms, resource room, an office and a general purpose room was added.

In 2014 a classroom and a Special Education Teacher room were added.

In 2022 we opened another new classroom and large toilet suitable for wheelchair use.
